The stories all immortalise aspects of nineteenth century life, and the ideas of the time, including ideas some class, which are often real pronounced in the stories. In The Red Room, by H.G. Wells, a man visits Lorraine castle, to demonstrate and spend a night in the supposedly haunt fashion of the title. H e lights candles in the room, but they go out until the room is dark. The man stumbles about in the darkness, hurts himself on the article of furniture and falls shoot down the stairs. At the end of the story he believes that there were no ghosts at all, and that there is only guardianship in the room.
